This pages lists the complete works of Shakespeare, collected into a single volume (or a few volumes). Single volume complete works are usually cheaper than buying a set of individual plays, but they often have fewer notes than their individual counterparts. My personal favorite is the Arden Shakespeare, but other favorites include Addison-Wesley's, the Pelican (published by Viking), and the Signet edition has always been popular among high schools.
Don't forget a facsimile of the First Folio! It's helpful to read the work of editors, but there's no substitute for seeing the First Folio text from 1623. A new, affordable facsimile is now available from Routledge.
Finally, the not-so-complete works, as brought to you by the Reduced Shakespeare Co.
Addison-Wesley, The Complete Works of Shakespeare
edited by David Bevington 1997
Now in its fourth edition.
Arden Shakespeare, Complete Works
Edited by Richard Proudfoot, et al. 1998
The best of the bunch. Affordable, but scholarly. It lacks the footnotes of the individual Arden plays, but many readers consider that a feature. Includes texts from the Arden 2 and Arden 3.
Clarendon, William Shakespeare: The Complete Works
edited by Stanley Wells 1988
Folger, The First Folio of Shakespeare : Based on Folios in the Folger Shakespeare Library Collection
edited by Charles Hinman 1996
A new facsimile of the First Folio, from the Folger Library's impressive collection of 82 copies.
Grammercy, William Shakespeare: The Complete Works
1993
Inexpensive, but you get what you pay for.
Harcourt-Brace-Jovanovich, Shakespeare: The Complete Works
edited by George Harrison 1952
Houghton Mifflin, The Riverside Shakespeare
edited by J.J.M. Tobin, et al. 1997
Houghton Mifflin, The Riverside Shakespeare
edited by J.J.M. Tobin, et al. 1997
A two-volume edition.
Oxford, The Complete Oxford Shakespeare: Histories Vol 1
Comedies (Vol 2)
edited by Stanley Wells and Gary Taylor 1994
For the full set, see the Clarendon Press, above.
Routledge, Mr. William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies : A Facsimile of the First Folio 1623
edited by Doug Moston 1998
An affordable First Folio facsimile. No Shakespearean library is complete without a Folio facsimile.
Signet, The Complete Signet Classic Shakepeare
edited by Sylvan Barnett 1972
Popular among schools.
Viking, The Complete Pelican Shakespeare
edited by Alfred Harbage 1974
A popular text for schools.
Reduced Shakespeare Co, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)
1993
Not really the complete works, but a hilarious abridgement.
